Kniha sleduje Amaru, ktorá sa z vykričaného domu v Pompejách dostane do Ríma a stane sa vysokopostavenou kurtizánou, získava slobodu, vplyv a bohatstvo, no minulosť ju prenasleduje; jej dcéra zostáva v Pompejách pod starostlivosťou muža, ktorého Amara milovala, a píše sa rok 79 n. l. a Vezuv sa prebúdza. Recenzentka má k sérii zmiešané pocity: prvý diel ju prekvapil, druhý zaostával a tretí sa opiera najmä o udalosti z dvojky; autorkin štýl a atmosféra jej sadli, no dej jej miestami pripadal monotónny a nevyvolal hlbšie emócie. Najväčšie sklamanie jej spôsobil osud Félixa, ktorý pôsobil odfláknuto a príliš urýchlene, a záver trilógie je pre ňu síce symbolický, ale nie úplne uspokojivý — očakávala väčšiu hĺbku a silnejší dopad tragédie Pompejí.

Prekrásna obálka a záver príbehu zaslúžili vysoké hodnotenia od čitateľa. Postavy sú dobre rozvinuté a autorka navodila silnú atmosféru napätia a dobrodružstva prostredníctvom zaujímavých zvratov v dejovom zápletku. Série sa stáva stálicou na knižných policiach a získava si srdcia čitateľov vďaka svojej realistickosti a emocionálnemu príbehu.
