Hlavná hrdinka Phyllida (Philly) je očarujúco naivná a odpúšťajúca, zatiaľ čo kapitán Arthur Heywood je zranený samotár; ich otvorený, vzájomnou dôverou založený vzťah patrí k najsilnejším stránkam knihy.
